30 days of night #1  by Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith      Published by IDW   www.idwpublishing.com
30 Days is, simply, a good old fashion horror story.  Set in a beautifully remote border town in Alaska where the sun disappears for a pleasantly depressing month every winter, hence the title. During this time the population suddenly swells and then just as suddenly decreases when a bus load of zombie'esk Vampires decide to hold their annual general union meeting there and start offing the good people of Barrow..    though in fairness they did ask for it being such isolated antisocial Canadian types.....        The first to realise their rather sticky predicament, are the local husband and wife sheriff team, who in true frontier spirit throw themselves headlong into the situation and then proceed to puke their guts out.
Ben Templesmith's painted artwork is just delightful.  Very reminiscent and gothic, giving the story at times an almost frantic feel and then just as suddenly stopping it dead (no pun intended) in it's tracks....    it reminds me a little of both Jae Lee and Sam Kieth's early darker work and fit's this tale to a tee.
The story it's self, is good if not particularly original, though handled well and with enough subtlety as not to make it seem that you'd seen it all before....

In conclusion,    looking forward to the next issue and recommend it if ya fancy a nice bit of body munching.......

The Filth #1    by Grant Morrison, Chris Weston        Published by DC/Vertigo   www.crackcomics.com
Wahoo!!!!!    The mad fucks who gave us The Invisibles are back!     God bless them, for there are very few people that can pen a "what the fuck!?" story like Grant does. Now once again teaming up with the stunningly english visuals of Mr. Weston, i collected this little baby with some mean anticipation and was happy to note at the end of it, a most satisfying "what the fuck!?".
The focus this time rests on some rather psychotic triplets, a chick who seams to be the only one who knows what's going on (i have no bloody clue) and some poor old bloke quietly trying to buy his monthly porn who is about to have his slightly feeble grasp on reality shoved cleanly up his ass.
In very much the same ilk as their other stuff (and this is no bad thing at all!), this is a roller coaster gaining speed through a tunnel of lsd inspired sex, insectiod technology, deep twisting conspiracy and a bit of glam thrown in for good measure....      The artwork inspires visions in me (and always has) of Alan Moore tripping his tits off in a London fetish dungeon and as for the story....  ,      well it's a little early to say whether there actually is one at this point but that rarely seems matter, it's the first issue, i'm a huge fan of Morrison's work, and what is there is fucking great anyway.....      so all hail the crown prince of weird,      go out and buy this,    and say it with me folks.....    "what the fuck!?"

In conclusion,    Quick! Run.........             It's the Filth!

Wolverine/Hulk #1-4   by Sam Kieth         Published by Marvel   www.marvel.com
Oh my word.....   How the mighty have fallen!      why Sam!  for the love of god why!!!!!         Now...    after bringing us the ground breaking 'The Maxx' and most recently the fascinating treatise 'Four Woman', Mr. Kieth has unfortunately shagged this right up.
These two fan favorite sulking bruisers have had their ups and downs as far as quality mags go, from downright sucking to inspired writing, they have happily pounded the shit out of each other over the years and i would like to say that this outing is simply disappointing, but frankly, it bites.     The storyline sluggishly slimes it's way to their meeting with a bit of ghost action thrown in and then a good bit of pounding (the highlight to be honest) and even this was rather slow and repetitive.  With two such established characters you'd think he'd have a field day fucking with them, instead we have a formulaic routine with some dire emotional dialog....    The silver lining obviously comes from his art work, which as always these day's is quite stunning with esoteric layouts and gorgeous framework...  and while i find his wolvie a bit horn-ed, the depiction of the hulk is dramatic at worst and some of the best you will ever see...

In conclusion,    Pick it up for the wicked visuals if you find it the bargain bins.......
Rating :-         1 fluffy bear  (for the artwork)
